Around 9:15 p.m. on Sunday, April 2, 2017, a 2002 blue Chevy Cavalier being driven by 73 year old Bill Ross of Lake Wales was traveling north in the inside (left) lane of US Hwy 27 approaching Peace Creek Park Road, when he made a right-hand turn to enter onto Peace Creek Road. When he did so, he entered into the path of a 2000 silver Toyota Corolla being driven by 37 year old Joselyn Pierre of Pembroke Park, which was in the outside (right) lane and also heading north on US Hwy 27.
The Corolla struck the Cavalier on the front passenger side, encroaching into the vehicle; both vehicles slid and struck a metal guardrail. The Cavalier caught on fire, and both occupants were removed by passers-by and responding deputies. Ross’ wife and only passenger, 74 yr old Barbara Ross, was declared deceased on-scene. Mr. Ross was taken to LRHMC with critical injuries.
Pierre had minor injuries and was treated & released from Winter Haven Hospital.
Impairment does not appear to be a factor, however, it was rainy and dark, and there are no significant street lights in the area, which may be factors. US Hwy 27 northbound was closed for several hours during the investigation.
Deputies have made next-of-kin notification to the Ross family.
